Headed to The Great Perhaps

The quote, “I go to seek a great perhaps,” has a special meaning for our March Spotlight Athlete.

Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic is proud to introduce Janette Loera, March 2017’s Spotlight Athlete. This outstanding young woman is disciplined and competes daily on the courts, field, throughout the community, and in the classroom.

Our recipient began her athletic career playing basketball in the park with her father, who happens to be the source of all her inspiration. He ran track for South San Antonio, so the work ethic and competitive nature ran in her blood. He placed her on basketball teams, her first team sport, starting in second grade and continuing until she reached high school. Janette recalls at the tender age of five years old, her father handed over her first basketball jersey. That tangible token of what her future may hold, ignited a fire to become the best young athlete she could be.

Janette played on various teams for nine years which led her to her distinguished high school career. She started off running cross country, playing volleyball on the JV team and playing on the freshman team for basketball. She began receiving her sparkle as a freshman when she was awarded Freshman Runner of the Year. Janette made her presence known on the basketball court the next year and quickly earned a starting position as a sophomore.

“Being moved up from the freshman team to the varsity team was a major leap,”

she said. However, this jump did not derail her persistence. Loera not only earned a starting spot, but she was also named team co-captain, Honorable Mention by the district, and was featured in “VarCity Magazine.”  Her sophomore year was a big year; she also competed on the volleyball court and in track and field. Loera made the jump from JV volleyball as a freshman, to a sophomore on varsity. Volleyball intrigued Janette, and her competitive nature kicked in to become the best. She enjoyed basketball but she loved volleyball because she savored the intensity and diving on the court to extend the rallies.

“Volleyball was filled with pressure. I worked hard and busted my butt over the summer to earn a starting spot as a Defensive Specialist”

Janette said with excitement in her voice.

Her tenacity was rewarded that year when she earned her starting spot on the first LBJ Volleyball Team to ever go to the state playoffs. Beating Del Rio High School at LBJ will be one memory she will cherish for years to come.

The following year did not show up without awards to shower the growing achievements of this young star. Janette became Team Captain and Second Team All-District during her basketball season. Senior year brought a starting shooting guard position for basketball, and an Honorable Mention for volleyball. Currently she is competing in her track season. Janette is the second leg in the 4 x 200-meter relay. Additionally, she competes in the 300 and 100 meter intermediate hurdles, triple jump, and long jump.

Janette has earned All-Academic Awards for both volleyball and basketball. In addition to all her accolades in the sports arena, the same work ethic and passion follow her in the classroom as well. Ms. Loera was also inducted into the Wolf Pack Leaders for the Outstanding Recognition for Academic and Athletic performance. Loera is taking part in the Distinguished Achievement Program and engages in the Laredo Community College Dual Enrollment Program.  She is excelling in the Academy of Government, Politics, and Ethics at Lyndon B. Johnson High School. Loera is ranked 32nd out of 686 students with a GPA of 3.95.  Janette is also an active member of Student Council and serves as Vice President of her class as well as Class Treasurer her sophomore year. By maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 each year, Janette flies past this requirement to find her spot secure in the National Honors Society. She was a State Finalist for Wendy’s High School Heisman Athlete Scholarship in 2016. Janette is also certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED, which is a huge bonus when involved in as many sports as she is. She is also fluent in English and Spanish and can speak French.

Janette is a well-rounded young woman who has an incredible grip on life. Loera plans on graduating at LBJ High School then going on to attend the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Her interests of majors include Biology and Psychology. She aspires to work in treatment and clinical fields in her future.

John Green’s quote, “I go to seek a great perhaps,” has a special meaning for Janette. She interprets it as “you’re already here. Now, you must go find what will make you great.”  When she was asked what her ‘great perhaps’ will be, she replied, “Perhaps I’ll be a walk on at UTRGV!”

Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic has no doubt that Janette will find her great perhaps. We are so proud of Janette Loera, and it is our honor to recognize her as Laredo Sports Medicine’s March 2017 Athlete Spotlight Athlete.
