Small Frame, Big Spirit
Nayelli Anahi Fuentes is a varsity Tiger cheerleader on the award winning Martin High School cheerleading squad. Nayelli and her team are currently working on their upcoming competition at the National Cheerleading Association’s national competition in Dallas, Texas January of 2017. For anyone who has seen cheerleading competitions, you know that these are incredible athletes who push their bodies to unbelievable limits. Cheerleading requires strength, stamina, and coordination. It’s easy to get injured while performing these magnificent feats of agility and graceful acrobatic movements.
“I love what I do. I love to pump up the crowd and cheering my team on.”
says an exuberant Nayelli. Nayelli is a testament to the adage; big things come in little packages. As she cheers, you can see her team spirit is larger than her small frame. Her joy of cheerleading should be no surprise. Ms. Fuentes has been cheering since 3rd grade at Bruni Elementary. She was a member of her middle school cheer team and its captain in the 8th grade. Nayelli competed and successfully made her squad in her first year at Martin High. Now, she is a veteran team leader in her second year. She is an accomplished cheerleader having been an NCA All-American Nominee, and her stunt group earned a trip to nationals. They will be competing against top teams from across the state and country.
As if Ms. Fuentes’ schedule wasn’t already full, she performs mariachi music with the Martin High School Mariachi. She and her group recently received a U.I.L. Mariachi 1st Division at the state level. Additionally, Nayelli is enrolled in the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts in the dance program, which is a natural fit for this highly creative athlete.
Nayelli plans on attending Sam Houston State University. She plans on majoring in criminal justice. Nayelli says,
“I hope I can continue to cheer at the college level. That is one of my goals.”
She certainly has the drive and determination to do so. Ms. Fuentes remarks on how honored she feels about being the LSMC’s Spotlight Athlete.
“It’s such an amazing experience for me. I feel it’s an inspirational message that we bring to the younger kids that want to be athletes and be successful.”
Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic is honored to share Nayelli’s story with our patients and community here in Laredo, Texas. She represents so many of our student-athletes who do great things in their sport, their studies, and their city.
Congratulations Nayelli Anahi Fuentes on all of your accomplishments and for having such big spirit! Dr. Puig, Dr. Solis, Dr. Potty, and all the staff at Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic are proud to recognize you as the November 2016 Spotlight Athlete.
