LSMC honors 12 locals for athletics

750x250 Athlete Spotlight 2016

The Laredo Sports Medicine Clinic honored local athletes on Friday night holding the second-annual LSMC Athlete Spotlight Awards Ceremony inside the Stadium Club of Uni-Trade Stadium. On the day, 12 different locals were honored for their performance this season.

“This ceremony is just a small token of appreciation for the athletes who positively reflect our community,” LSMC CEO Jacob Puig said. “We are extremely proud to be honoring these athletes who have overcome obstacles and accomplished so much.”

The individuals honored were named LSMC’s athlete of the month between August 2015 through July 2016. They each received a plaque commemorating their achievement. The winners included Wayo Gonzalez, Ignazio “Nacho” Tellez, Elwynn “Greg” Sherman, Alejandra Trevino and Homer Maldonado in 2015 from August to December, respectively. Martha Perez was the honoree in January leading to the recognition of Daniella Hernandez, Bonnie Tijerina, Dr. Fernando Sosa, Raine Perez, Samantha Avila and Gabriela Senties through July.

The last two winners in Avila and Senties each were special honorees as they both won a $500 scholarship.

“It was very surprising,” said Avila, who will be attending UT Rio Grande Valley. “It took me off guard but it’s really exciting to get it. I’m glad they can help me along the way.”

Following the ceremony, the athletes and families received passes to stay for the Lemurs’ game against Joplin. Laredo manager Pete Incaviglia and pitchers Ryan Beckman and Troy Marks were present for the awards ceremony. As another special honor, Avila threw out the first pitch to begin the night.
